Getting kids involved with their health early is very important, and it doesn't have to be as hard as you think. Early education about heart health can lead to better health outcomes as an adult. The sooner you start the conversation about heart health, the better. So here are a few important reasons to teach your kids about heart health, and ways to get the conversation started.

Teaching kids about heart health in age-appropriate ways is very important. Helping kids learn good health habits while young can help to build and maintain better habits in adulthood. Including kids when it comes to health can help them feel more responsible for taking care of themselves. Allowing kids the opportunity to learn how to take care of themselves is such an important thing; starting young can help to ingrain how important heart health really is.

If a child does not learn about heart health, they could go into their teenage or young adult years without knowing how to take care of their heart. They could be engaging in activities that could be harmful to their heart without knowing it and may not understand why it's so important to protect their heart and prevent heart disease.

Teaching kids about heart health young can also help them to understand if something is not right. Teaching kids what is normal for their heart and what is not can give kids a chance to let you know if something is wrong. In 2010, 1 in 250 to 1 in 59 children and teens were living with a heart defect. Letting kids know what is normal young can help them know if what is happening is not normal, and maybe something to talk to a doctor about.

Getting the conversation about heart health going with kids doesn't have to be hard; simple things like talking about what your heart does and that we need to protect it can be an easy way to start. You can also talk about how eating healthy and exercising can also help our heart, and that’s one reason why we do those things!

No matter how you decide to start the conversation, it's important that you do!
